INFORMATION filed at the High Court in Lautoka yesterday reveals the Fiji Police Force will destroy the 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine between February 24 and March 14 at the Dignified Cremations in Davuilevu, Nausori.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has made this information available to lawyers acting for individuals charged in the case.

High Court judge, Justice Aruna Aluthge had ordered on December 13 last year that lawyers representing the accused persons were to be informed of the plan to destroy the drugs.

“Given the scale of this exercise, it is critical to ensure proper co-ordination among all relevant units and sections within FPF (Fiji Police Force),” states the plan document dated January 29, 2025 that has been prepared by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mesake Waqa.

“A transparent and carefully executed process is required, as any form of interference could jeopardise the prosecution of the case in court and compromise the integrity of the Fiji Police Force.”

The plan also operation also takes into consideration serious health concerns associated with the destruction or disposal of such a high volume of methamphetamine.

“Hence, the methodology for destruction has been planned meticulously to safeguard the officers tasked with the destruction process, the general public, and the environment.”

The Fiji Police Force states a taskforce will be formed to oversee the destruction of the drugs.

“The dedicated taskforce will ensure that all due diligence is fully observed in accordance with the Court Order dated 13 December 2024, conduct of reconnaissance of the area of interest and peripheries and vetting of all stakeholders and task force members involved in the operation.”

The plan states representatives from the following will be invited to witness the destruction of the drugs – Ministry of Justice, Office of Director Public Prosecutions, Legal Counsels, Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ministry of Environment, Energy Fiji Ltd, Dignified Crematorium, International Observers, regional partners, Nasinu Town Council and selected members from the community.
