“When I informed her of my Flying Fijian debut she cried and told me that I have finally achieved my dreams,” he said.
While 2024 was a year of breakthrough for 19-year-old Setareki Turagacoke, he did not dream to be met with the most devastating news in the beginning of this year.
The youngest Flying Fijian lost his mother, Vani Ranavue, last Saturday following a short illness.
The Dakuinuku, Tailevu lad who made his debut for the Flying Fijians in their Test match against Spain on November 17 last year said he misses his cheerleader who supported his rugby since throughout.
Speaking from France yesterday, Turagacoke said his mother was the happiest when she learnt of his debut in the white jumper.
“When I informed her of my Flying Fijian debut she cried and told me that I have finally achieved my dreams,” he said.
“I received the news of her passing on Saturday afternoon here in France,” Turagacoke said.
“She always advised me on three things before game day; enjoy your game, always have faith and trust yourself. I will hear that no more.”
His mother was originally from Naselai village, also in Tailevu.
He indicated that his mother hid her illness from him and his siblings.
“It’s sad that she’s taken from us too early especially when my sisters are still young; they were raised with our grandmother after my parents split.
“If I had the chance to say goodbye; I would’ve thanked her for raising us up as she never once said no to my older brother and I.”
Turagacoke said his mother always believed that he would don the Flying Fijian jersey one day.
“My older brother plays rugby league in Australia, my sister is in Year 9 while the youngest girl is in Year 4,” the former Lelean Memorial School student said.
“My elder brother and I will take over from here and provide for our younger siblings.”
Turagacoke will depart France today to attend his mother’s funeral next Saturday.
He advises youths in the country to remain close and have strong bonds with their parents.
“We don’t know when we’ll leave this world but only God.” he said.
“I urge them to spent time with their family at this moment and thank them for their love and support over the years.”
The late Ranavue is survived by her four children.
Meanwhile, Turagacoke was instrumental in his performance against the Spaniards scoring a try in his debut to guide Fiji with a 33 – 19 win.
His outing against Spain impressed head coach Mick Byrne securing a spot in the match-day 23 against Ireland at Aviva Stadium on November 24.
He scored a try off the bench against Ireland but it was not enough as Fiji lost 52 – 17.
He has also started in one of seven games for his French club Stade Francis Paris Rugby in the Top 14 and Champions cup competition.
Turacoke made his Top 14 debut on October 13 lat year.
