There has to be an immediate independent inquest into the death of Richard Mock, the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has stated.
Commission Chairman, Pravesh Sharma said they were deeply concerned over the lack of accountability in the case.
“The Commission calls for an immediate and independent inquest, as mandated under the Inquests Act 1967, which requires a formal inquiry into any death occurring in custody,” said Mr Sharma.
“A transparent investigation is crucial to uncover the truth, ensure justice for the deceased and his family, and restore public confidence in the integrity of law enforcement.”
“No one is above the law. The Commission urges authorities to act swiftly in holding those responsible accountable.”
Mr Sharma added the protection of human rights, including the right to life and dignity, must be always upheld.
“The Commission has written to the Fiji Police Force, awaiting a formal response. We will continue to monitor the case closely.”
Fiji Police said yesterday investigations were on0going.
