The Honiara City Council (HCC), under the leadership of Lord Mayor Cr. Eddie K. Siapu has expressed its strongest condemnation of the recent tragic murder that resulted in the loss of an innocent life.
“This act of violence has deeply saddened the community and underscores the urgent need for collective responsibility in maintaining peace and order within our city,” the Mayor said.
In light of this, the Council calls upon community leaders, tribal elders, and family members of youths involved in such acts of violence to rise up and take proactive steps.
“It is vital that these issues are addressed through culturally appropriate means, fostering dialogue and reconciliation within our communities.
“We believe resolving conflicts through traditional mechanisms can help restore harmony and prevent further tragedies,” the Mayor said.
On this note, the Council acknowledges customary reconciliation between leaders of Kwaio and East Makira, signifying remorse for the murder by Kwaio leaders, and acceptance of the apology by East Makira leaders and relatives of the deceased.
The Council also urges the Police Force to continue their diligent investigations into this matter and to bring those responsible to justice.
Law enforcement agencies are essential in maintaining law and order, and we request that they intensify their efforts. Regular patrols around Honiara City are necessary to deter criminal activities and reassure residents of their safety.
The visibility and presence of police officers in the community are crucial elements in the ongoing effort to uphold peace and security.
Furthermore, the mayor appeals to community and tribal leaders to actively engage with the youth in their areas.
Many young people are roaming aimlessly, which can lead to involvement in criminal activities. To prevent this, communities should organize constructive activities, such as farming, planting vegetables, and other community development projects.
Encouraging youths to return to their villages to work on farms and plantations can provide meaningful engagement and reduce the chances of youth involvement in violence.
The Council remains committed to fostering a safer and more livable city. We will continue to work with elected Ward Committee members and community representatives to strengthen community engagement and address issues contributing to insecurity.
Despite its limited resources, Honiara City Council administration said it is dedicated to collaborating with the national government and relevant stakeholders to effectively tackle law and order challenges and improve the overall well-being of our residents.
Additionally, Chief Willie Aulanga urges leaders within the Borderline and Gilbert Camp areas, including elders and parents, to have serious and ongoing conversations with their children.
It is crucial that parents teach their children the importance of behaving as responsible, law-abiding citizens. Early intervention and guidance are essential in preventing youth from falling into criminal activities.
The Honiara City Council remains steadfast in its resolve to promote peace, safety, and development. We call on everyone—community leaders, families, law enforcement, and citizens—to work together in ensuring that Honiara remains a peaceful city where everyone can live and thrive in safety.
