Goodman Fielder Fiji (GFF) has joined forces with the Fiji Netball Association to sponsor the upcoming Fiji Secondary Schools Netball Championship on August 21 to 23 at the National Netball Centre in Laucala, Suva.
The competition will now be known as the Crest Chicken Fiji Secondary School Netball Championship.
Netball Fiji CEO Vivian Koster while acknowledging their partnership said this was part of their promoting netball at secondary school level.
“It not only supports our school-based athletes but also helps grow grassroots netball,” Koster said.
“Our schools develop our future Fiji Pearls. We currently have a 21 and under squad preparing for the Netball World Youth Cup with 17 secondary school students in that squad.”
Koster said 132 teams would be in action at the Crest Chicken Fiji Secondary School Netball Championship this year.
“The tournament will be played in six grades including the boys’ grade,” she said.
“Each grade will have 22 teams with the best from the six rallies picked from around the country.
“There would be about 1980 players at the national championship.”
FSSNA president Navitalai Naivalu said he was thankful that like in the past Goodman Fielder supported the development of netball in Fiji.
“We hope that we will work more with GFF in the future and hope to have a good competition this year,” he said.
GFF general manager Tim Carter said they were excited to be involved with secondary netball.
“We see grassroot netball development as an opportunity to grow and it is exciting to see males coming to play in more competitions,” he said.
“We were quite inspired by the work that the netball association is doing in Fiji and their passion for development of netball in Fiji.”
Carter expressed their commitment to providing quality, affordable and healthy protein sources for athletes in Fiji.
“We see talent development and students’ aspirations to be future netballers and if they don’t make it to the elite level, these athletes can contribute to the sport locally,” he said.
