‘Glad to be Home’

‘Glad to be Home’

To be back on their home turf is a heartwarming experience for the four Kadavu Swire Shipping Fijian Drua men’s squad members.

Halfback Philip Baselala, Simione Kuruvoli, Kemu Valetini and fullback Vuate Karawalevu are part of the Fijian Drua pre-season camp at Namalata, Kadavu this week.

The side had their first training session at the Namalata Central School grounds on Tuesday following a traditional welcome ceremony.

Kuruvoli, 25, who hails from Nabouwalu, Ono, Kadavu said the trip was a way to reconnect with his family roots.

“It means a lot,” Kuruvoli said.

“We don’t come here often especially the Western gang; for the Kadavu boys it’s good to come and connect with the family and visit our people and villages.

“We’ve enjoyed the training, giving back to the players back here at home especially to the young kids.”

Dravuwalu man, Karawalevu, shared similar sentiments.

“I’m glad that the idea to have our pre-season here was possible.

“This is a great getaway especially for those who are in Kadavu for the first time.

Baselala added: “It means a lot to me back in my home soil.

“We are able to do our team bonding here and show them (teammates) my beautiful island – the hidden paradise.”

Baselala is from Solotavui, Nakasaleka.

Members of the Fijian Drua squad took to the open sea for their pre-season training at Namalata Bay yesterday.

They did a strenuous boat race exercise as Namalata and Namuana villagers watched and cheered them on.

Head coach Glen Jackson said it was a great experience from the boat trip, fine weather and the traditional kava ceremony.

Meanwhile, Drua head of athletic performance Nacani Cawanibuka, also hails from Kadavu.

The Drua men return on tomorrow (Friday).
