Give your best: President urges players

Ratu Wiliame commended the coaching and management staff for their relentless efforts in preparing the team both mentally and physically.

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team for the FIFA World U20 Championship presented the traditional i-tatau to the President, RatuWiliame Katonivere, at the State House, Suva, on Friday.

The President praised the team’s achievements and expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the coaches, management and the young athletes themselves.

“This is truly a remarkable achievement, as this marks the first time that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia and it is indeed a commendable effort,” Ratu Wiliamesaid.

Fiji, renowned for its excellence in rugby, is now capturing the world’s attention through its achievements in football, with Ratu Wiliameemphasising that Fiji has consistently “punched above its weight” on the international stage, particularly in sports.

The President reiterated the nation’s outstanding success in tournaments such as sevens rugby, making it clear that the women football team’s achievements are ushering in an exhilarating new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.

Nonetheless, he recognised the challenges faced by the team, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities.

Ratu Wiliame commended the coaching and management staff for their relentless efforts in preparing the team both mentally and physically.

“What you have done is something else,” he remarked expressing his gratitude and admiration for their dedication.

 

The Head of State also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players and their families while acknowledging the important role of the team manager, Naziah Ali- Krishna.

“We will continue to support and pray for the team and the management as you lead and mentor these young ladies who are about to represent Fiji,” he said.

The Fiji U20 women’s team will compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. The tournament is a significant milestone for Fiji, highlighting the growth and development of women’s football in the country.
It will inspire the next generation of athletes and bring the nation together in support of its football team on the global stage.

August 31: 6pm Fiji v Brazil

September 3: 8pm Fiji v Canada
September 6: 5pm Fiji v France.
