Traditionally, we cannot have two chiefs leading a province.
At times when there is a dispute for the chiefly title, the relevant authorities would step in to help resolve the issue.
The fact of the matter is that only one leader is being installed to lead.
In some instance when the leadership issues are not resolved and there are two or more claimants to the leadership title, the people are split when it comes to their loyalty; rebellious attitude develops, air of uncertainty; being weak, less productive and very negative in their outlook.
Even the Bible teaches us that no man can serve two masters.
They’ll be loyal to one and despises the other.
That is reason why the Fijian Drua management must review their decision of having two cocaptains and must chuck it out of their system.
No one denies the fact that Tevita Ikanivere and Frank Lomani are two of the best players in the Super Rugby Pacific competition but not as co-captains.
It would have better if one of them was named captain while the other is to be his deputy.
This is because both players have their own leadership style. They have their way of communicating with the players, challenging them to the task, leading by example in order to get the players respect and cooperation.
However, the danger is that any difference in outlook or opinion between the two could spell trouble to the squad. We must not give any room for such turbulent elements to exist within the players, coaches and management.
Moreover, there are also players who are opportunists who could use such situation to their advantage.
What was wrong when we had only one captain from Nemani Nagusa and continued on by Meli Derenalagi? The Drua produced the results that were needed in winning two matches in their debut year in 2022. Then 2023 and 2024 under Derenalagi’s watch made it to the play-offs.
It’s that one voice from our leader is what every Fijian is accustomed too. It’s our culture. It’s ingrained in us and it’s in our DNA.
That is why the ‘co-captains concept’ might work with other overseas club but not with us.
So, with Lomani injured, Ikanivere to improve on his game and Mesulame Dolokoto stepping in as captain, it’s time for head coach Glen Jackson and Drua management to make that decision on the ‘co-captains’ concept while we still have a chance for a top six finish.
