GCW elects new president

The Guadalcanal Council of Women (GCW) has a a new president.

She is Stella Kokopu, who after being elected has pledged to strengthen the council’s outreach to rural communities and promote inclusive development initiatives.

In an interview with the Solomon Star, the newly elected president stated that her priority will be to implement the Council’s four-year strategic plan.

A particular focus will be on literacy, women’s health, peace-building, and economic empowerment.

“Women in rural areas face barriers to access, education, and decision-making,” she said.

“This Council must be their voice—not from afar, but by walking alongside them.”

Ms Kokopu emphasized the importance of collaborating with village leaders, youth, and men’s groups to promote shared responsibility for gender inclusion.

“Empowerment cannot be a one-sided effort; it requires communities to come together,” she stated.

She also expressed her eagerness to collaborate with the Guadalcanal Provincial Government, civil society organizations, NGOs, and other development partners.

“My executive team cannot accomplish this work alone. We look forward to building strong partnerships that will help us reach every corner of Guadalcanal,” she added.

Although there are still challenges, such as limited resources and the geographic dispersion of communities, Kokopu expressed confidence in the council’s ability to adapt and respond.

“This is about programs,” she stated. “It is about ensuring that every woman knows her voice matters.”

Joining Kokopu’s new executive team are Cynthia Luza as Vice President, Ennedy Sese as Secretary, and Rose Kulolo as Treasurer.

This team brings a mix of grassroots experience and leadership that stakeholders believe will energize the Council’s work in the years to come.
