The Ministry of Education is incorporating sports funding as part of its broader Free Education Grant, which is distributed to Government schools across the country.

Speaking to SUNsports, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro confirmed that while the exact name of the sports fund remains unclear, a portion of the grant would be specifically allocated for sports-related activities in schools.

The Free Education Grant covers a range of expenses for students. It is divided into several key categories, which now involves sports.

Radrodro said the school heads are responsible for ensuring that these funds are utilised properly,

in line with the managment handbook provided to schools.

“Heads of school will receive further training this year to help them navigate the process effectively,” he said.

“Each student receives a certain amount, say $200, which is then divided across these six categories.

The challenge is to ensure these funds are used as intended,” Radrodro clarified.

To monitor the usage of these funds, he said, the ministry has put in place a reporting mechanism requiring schools to submit audited financial accounts at the end of each year.

These reports, presented are during the school’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where it helps the ministry track whether funds are being spent appropriately.

Despite these measures, Radrodro said, that some schools, particularly those in remote locations, face challenges in fully utilising these allocations.

“We encourage schools to maximise the use of these funds,” he said highlighting that while the intention is for all categories, including sports to be funded, some schools struggle to make the most of their grants due to logistical issues.

Radrodro said the ministry’s decision to explicitly allocate funds for sports activities is part of a broader effort to improve educational infrastructure and student engagement in extracurricular activities across Fiji schools.

He reaffirmed that all schools in the country benefit from the Free Education Grant, but stressed the importance of effective and efficient use of these funds, particularly as the nation’s educational landscape continues to evolve.
