Fiji Pine Lautoka Maroons have a history of fielding flankers who consistently take on the driver’s seat that lead them to success.

These exceptional players have epitomised the spirit, skills, and resilience that Maroons rugby is known for.

Robust flanker Eroni Leone took out the player of the match performance award when they narrowly defeated FMF Suva 21-19 to retain the INKK Farebrother-Sullivan challenge trophy for the second time at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka last Saturday.

The Ba native who has maternal links to Yaqeta in Yasawa is dubbed as one of the best flankers of this age, celebrating his remarkable achievements, exploring, and analysing his physical attributes, uncovering what makes him special.

“I have been watching Suva rugby team as a young kid, I used to study the forwards position including mine, that gets me started when I play,” he said.

“I believe that I have raised the bar today (Saturday). Next on my wish list now is to be part of the Fijian Drua one day.”

Leone has featured in three unions, he previously played for Northland Senior XV in 2021, the following year with Suva, he is part of the Maroons camp this season.

He believes that their next match against Naitasiri will be clincher.

“I did not play against Naitasiri in the Skipper Cup as I did not recover on time,” Leone added.

“This season my first game was against Ba, but I have been watching Naitasiri’s game, I just cannot wait to play against them.

“The way Suva plays is similar to those patterns used by Naitasiri.”

Leone started playing rugby in primary school at Lovu Sangam School in Lautoka then at Drasa Secondary School before he moved to Suva to attend Nabua Secondary School.

The Maroons face Naitasiri in the third challenge at the Churchill Park in Lautoka on Saturday, at 3pm.
