‘First of its kind’ league underway in E/Fataleka

THE Sangorii Children’s/Girls’ Football League is underway at the Odou Sport Ground in Ward 14 of East Fataleka Constituency in Malaita Province after its official opening last Saturday.

The league is part of a football development effort by the communities in Ward 14.

The country’s first ever FIFA badge Assistant Referee David Sau, who voluntarily serves as the Sport Coordinator in East Fataleka Constituency, confirmed the commencement of the league last Saturday to Star Sport yesterday.

Mr Sau with the help of a Sport Committee in Ward 14, the league was organised to engage children and girls in football with the purpose of ensuring a peaceful community and developing and nurturing football talents.

He said children and girls from Fatima community to Lobo Island community in Ward 14 in East Fataleka are taking part in the league.

Mr Sau said the Children’s/Girls’ League is the first of its kind in the ward and the constituency at large.

“The league is for U12 boys, U15 boys and girls open category with confirmed teams from each of the categories. U12 boys with a total of 5 teams, U15 boys with a total of 8 teams and girls open category also with another 8 teams.

“Confirmed teams for U12s are Odou FC, Sangorii FC, Icemanu FC, Ovadi FC and kwasao FC. Confirmed teams for U15 boys include Sagorii FC, Fatima FC, Icemanu FC, Gagalu FC, Ferafa’alu FC, Manuitolo FC, Lololo FC and Fourau FC.

“The girls open category confirmed teams include Sangorii FC, Gagalu FC, Odou FRC, Icemanu FC, Fatima FC, Fourau FC, Lololo FC and Ferafa’alu FC,” he explained.

Mr Sau also took time to highlight the match officials coordinating the league and all other persons behind its successful organisation. 

“Executive members looking after the league Includes Chairman Stephen Sikwa’ae, Vice Chairman Matthias Selo, Secretary Ben Ledi Junior, Treasurer Philistas Keremanu and David Sau.

“Game officials are Ben Ledi Junior, Chris Kwari, James Kabeli, Rose Gesuna and Jenny.”

Mr Sau also appealed to the Member of Parliament for East Fataleka Rex Ramofafia and Provincial Assembly Member for Ward 14, David Solo Baerara to support the league with prizes.

He said no sponsors have yet been confirmed despite the commencement of the league.

Mr Sau also appealed to the people of Ward 14 living in Honiara who want to support the league to do so by contacting him.

Matches kicked off immediately after the official programme.
