The Fiji Rugby Union is planning to expand its development programme in the Northern Division.

This was revealed by acting chief executive officer Koli Sewabu during the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA) 50th Annual Congress on Saturday at Crowne Plaza in Nadi.

“Our unions in the North have indicated available land where we can build high-performance centres to support rugby development,” he said.

Using rugby as an analogy for business success, Sewabu emphasised the importance of discipline, teamwork strategic planning and adaptability.

He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to speak at the prestigious event, highlighting rugby’s significant contribution to Fiji’s economy and national identity.

The former Naitasiri head coach believes infrastructure development including stadiums and training facilities would bolster the “Grow North” policy, keeping talent in the region and strengthening Fiji’s rugby pipeline.

“Rugby and sports contribute so much to this country,” he said.

“Understanding the global economic changes and how we align ourselves with them is crucial—whether we like it or not, these shifts will impact us.

“With the right plans in place we can ensure rugby continues to inspire, unite, and contribute to Fiji’s success—on and off the field,” Sewabu added.

He added that the insights gained from the event would help Fiji Rugby strategise for the coming years, ensuring the sport remains a key player in national development.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica also said that plans for an international airport and port in the North would progress as business opportunities expand.
