The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s rugby sevens team topped the HSBC SVNS points table at the end of the Cape Town Sevens in South Africa yesterday.
Despite finishing third in the Cape Town Sevens, the Fijians managed to secure 36 points to lead followed by Spain 32 along with South Africa and France who are tied with 30.
The Fijians were beaten 17-19 in their semi-final clash against France before coming back to wallop Spain 47-10.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau said they didn’t take their chances against France.
“The boys were disappointed,” he said.
“We’ve worked a lot on defence and defence wins you championships.”
Naduvalu scored three tries each in Cape Town followed Ilikimi Torosi, Kavekini Tanivanuakula and George Bose with two tries each. South Africa won the Cape Town Sevens in front of their fans after beating France 26-14.
The next stop in the series is the Perth Sevens in Australia, which is from January 24-26.
First win
Meanwhile, in a slight improvement the Fijiana women’s side managed a 10th place finish after going down 14-12 to China in the ninth place playoff. The Timoci Volavola- coached side recorded their first win in the series after beating Brazil 22-19.
The Fijiana 7s side is placed 11th on the series points table while Spain is at 12th spot.
