Fiji finished second in Palau, Young outstanding

Former Fijiana 7s player and national sprinter Heleina Young was crowned the overall outstanding female athlete.

Team Fiji won 27 gold, 30 silvers and 24 bronze to secure second place at the Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau which ended on Wednesday.

Former Fijiana 7s player and national sprinter Heleina Young was crowned the overall outstanding female athlete at the Mini Games.

She made her return to the tracks this year following a short stint in rugby where she played for the Reds and signed with the Fijiana 7s before she was injured.

She won three gold medals and two silvers.

Young was also Team Fiji’s flag bearer during the closing ceremony.

Officials and athletes including weightlifting president Della Shaw Elder was also an award recipient; she received the best technical official award.

Nehemiah Elder who won three gold medals and smashed nine records was awarded best junior male athlete while Team Fiji va’a coach, Stanley Ooms, was the overall best coach.

Meanwhile, Tahiti won the Pacific Mini Games with 72 gold, 41 silvers and 29 bronze medals. Samoa finished third with 27 gold, 14 silvers and 20 bronze.
