The Peter Levastam-captained Team Flame Tree is favourites to clinch the Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024, which gets underway this weekend.
Organised by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, the event marks the anniversary tournament’s first year.
Top anglers are Peter Levestam, Jared Wood (Ice T), Thakor Punja (Lunasea), Darren Smith (Hoodlum), Alex Leigh and the evergreen, Marc McElrath while the women angler is Cristina Valente (Sidestep).
Coordinator Glenn Wakeman said the event has again attracted local and overseas anglers.
“The winning team gets an invitation to the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025 and a cash prize of $10,000,” he said.
“There are lots of prizes for species, anglers, and boats as well as spot prizes. It’s being held at the new Clubhouse at Port Denarau Marina, next to Sails Restaurant.”
He added the big cash prizes and top-shelf fishing equipment are also to be won, with overall major tournament prizes: Champion Team: Tournament Trophy, $10,000, including Consolation Big Boat Team: $1500, Champion Male, Female and Junior Anglers, and Last Man Standing.
Meanwhile, in the season’s teams’ tally, Flame Tree leads with 2313.7 points ahead of Ice T (2278.4), Hoodlum (1715.5), Lunasea (100), Rawhiti (250), and Sere Na Ua (123.4).
The top anglers are Wood (1771.8 points), Levestam (1500), Thakor Punja (1000) and Smith (555.4).
