Determination pays off for young lawyer

Meet Relmah Ha’ananga, a determined and passionate 33-year-old lawyer.

She is a Junior Lawyer with a private law firm, Voice Lawyers.

She was amongst one of the 25 lawyers who were admitted to the Solomon Islands Bar Association (SIBA) in May this year at the High Court.

Her parents, who originate from Malaita and Ulawa, instilled in her a deep respect for traditional laws and customs.

Relmah’s educational journey began at Tuvaruhu Primary School in Honiara, where she completed her primary studies.

She then attended KG Sixth to complete her form 5, before moving to Honiara High for forms 6-7.

Reflecting on her journey, Relmah said; “I was inspired by my mother, who always encouraged me to pursue my dreams.

“She was my rock, and her words of encouragement and faith in me kept me going, especially during difficult times.

“My father, who always pushed me to not give up, also played a significant role in my journey, and I am grateful for his support.”

Relmah’s interest in law began at a young age. “I was fascinated by the law from a young age,” Relmah said.

“I would watch movies and TV shows about lawyers and think, ‘That’s what I want to be one day.’ The movie ‘Legally Blonde’ was a particular inspiration for me. I loved the main character’s determination and passion for law.”

In form 5, Relmah and her friends skipped school to observe a petition case at the High Court.

This experience further solidified her desire to become a lawyer.

“I was captivated by the lawyers’ dress code and submissions,” Relmah recalled.

“From that moment on, I knew that I wanted to become a lawyer.

“The law is not just about winning cases or making money; it’s about seeking justice and protecting the rights of others.”

The journey to becoming a lawyer was not easy.

Relmah faced cultural challenges as a law student navigating the intersection of traditional customs and modern legal principles.

She balanced her personal and professional life by setting clear boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support from colleagues, friends, and family.

Relmah’s mother played a significant role in her life, and her passing during Relmah’s final year of law school was a difficult experience.

However, Relmah’s faith and support from her father helped her to persevere.

The most rewarding experience during my studies is when I pass all my courses and been awarded with a certificate in bachelor of Law and Professional Diploma in Legal Practice.

This did not come easy but through hard work and determination I managed to complete my program.

Relmah also expressed her gratitude for her internship experience, saying “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my former internship at Law Reform and Director of Prosecution which not only provided me with valuable experience but also played a significant role in my admission to SIBA. I am thankful for the opportunities and skills gained during my time there.”

As a young lawyer, Relmah has already had meaningful experiences as working at a private firm, working on cases involving criminal, land ownership, trespass (logging and mining) family matters and cases on unfair dismissals.

At a previous internship at Law Reform, she attended a workshop on Customary Land Reformation, where she interacted with permanent secretaries and leaders from government ministries.

Relmah’s ultimate goal is to run her own private law firm in the future and contribute to the development of a just and equitable society in the Solomon Islands.

She hopes to make a positive impact in her community, ensuring that every citizen has access to quality legal representation.

“If you have a passion for law, don’t give up on your dreams,” Relmah advises.

“Focus on developing essential skills, like analytical thinking and communication.

“And always remember to pray and trust in God – He’s the one who’s given me the strength and courage to pursue my goals.”

As Relmah looks to the future, she remains committed to her community and her faith.
Her journey serves as a shining example of the impact one person can have when they pursue their passions and make a positive difference in the world.
