Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Operations Mathias Lenaliu has commended the cooperation of communities in Noro and Munda, Western Province during the ongoing security operations for the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders’ Retreat.
Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview on Thursday, DC Lenialu said foot, vehicle, and sea patrols conducted by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) have so far been successful and peaceful.
“The security step-up began with the arrival of PIF leaders at Munda International Airport and their escort through to Agnes Lodge,” he said.
He added that the community’s response was overwhelming, with children, youths, women, men, and chiefs gathering to witness the historic occasion.
“On the return escort from Agnes Lodge, with a brief stopover, leaders proceeded to the Marina Hotel for the retreat. So far, security coverage has been strong and the atmosphere very peaceful,” he said.
He added anyone who doesn’t have an ID Pass will be restricted to designated sites where PIFs leaders are residing.
DC Lenialu also acknowledged the support of local security groups and the Community Policing Council (CPC) in working alongside RSIPF officers.
“It is encouraging to see everyone share the same vision and goal of ensuring the safety of our leaders and making this event a memorable one,” he said.
He confirmed that Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape is scheduled to depart Munda this evening at 5pm flight while most of the other leaders are staying overnight at the Marina Hotel and will return to Honiara after the program on Friday.
Meanwhile, on Friday the national government is expected to officially hand over several vehicles to government divisions in Noro, with some also to be allocated to Gizo.
A brief visit to SolTuna Cannery is also on the program.
