Take a walk along the streets of Honiara and other urban centres in Solomon Islands and you would never miss a sight of many young kids and teenagers wearing the so called ‘Crocs Sandal.’
This latest footwear fashion is taking the young population by storm with many of them buying the sandal over the past weeks and months.
As the fashion industry evolves and the introduction of footwear style continues to be introduced in the country the interest amongst the young population is also changing.
Now many kids prefer ‘crocs sandal’ than slippers, it was revealed.
A youth community leader Mulex Junior said, today many young children are so interested into wearing this ‘Crocs sandle.’
Crocs sandal was first introduced some ten years ago.
However, its not that popular back then even though its selling price was around $30. But now what makes it more popular is the introduction of stickers that are normally placed at the top of the sandal.
These stickers have various designs which are so attractive to the little kids and teenagers. They can be placed through the slots and also replaced.
They are normally sold separately at shops for $2 to $3 per sticker.
Visit any of the shops in Honiara and some of the urban centres and will find most the shops selling croc sandal and stickers.
A visit by the Solomon Star over the past days to most of the shops in Chinatown and Point Cruz in Honiara had seen more crocs sandal being displayed.
Interestingly because of its fancy designs and demand for this particular sandal, the price has also doubled.
A teacher told Solomon Star that most young students who more interested in wearing crocs sandal than school shoes.
“On their way to school they would wear their crocs sandal. However before entering the school compound they would wear their school shoes. After school they put on their crocs sandal before walking back home.”
A parent said most of his kids have gone crazy with croc sandal than before.
“Each day they would carry their crocs sandal in their bags to school. After school they would wear it. Not only that we would visit a nearby shop to look for stickers.
“They would also search my bag or pocket for any loose coins to buy a sticker each day,” he said with a smile.
The father added, many of the young ones are so crazy about this sandle.
A young being interviewed said, apart from the stickers, the comfortable feeling it provides when wearing the sandal is also a factor he wants a croc sandal.
Apart from young children there are adults who are also wearing this particular sandal because its comfortable, durable, can be used at muddy areas, the sea and its good for the rural areas.
