The mobilizing of machineries, equipment plants and materials by the contractor for the upgrade works at Lata airfield, Santa Cruz is making steady progress.
The much anticipated upgrade is supported by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), and is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA).
Since August 26, 2024, the contractor’s mobilization efforts have been well underway, with three barges scheduled to transport equipment and materials from Honiara to Lata.
The first barge has already arrived at Lata, delivering vehicles, equipment, and materials.
The second barge, carrying camp materials, is expected to arrive in Lata by the second week of October 2024, while the third barge, transporting the crushing plant is expected to arrive in Lata by the end of October 2024.
Additionally, the preparation of the Contractor’s Environmental and Social Management Plan is near to finalize, and geotechnical investigations and unexploded ordnance clearance have been successfully completed.
The Permanent Secretary of MCA, Mr. Alywn Danitofea, reiterated the Government’s dedication to the project, stating, “the Santa Cruz Airfield upgrade is a vital infrastructure investment that aligns with our national development goals; thus, it remains a high priority for the Government aiming to benefit the local community and the national economy.”
