The Bureta Young Boys was formed last year following their participation in the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament.
The club was then known as Tovolea Rugby but is now preparing to compete in the R.C. Manubhai Natovi Sevens tournament, from June 26–28 at the Natovi grounds.
What began as a challenging chapter, with players scattered and uncertain has grown into a united team grounded in purpose being a strong foundation for youths through rugby.
BYB head coach Josateki Soveavavanua said, they have risen from early uncertainty to become a team grounded in purpose, both on and off field.
The club has competed in five major tournaments including the Adi Natovi Sevens, Yalovata Sevens, OBRL Mini Sevens, RC Manubhai Sevens in Natalaira, and again at the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s.
Their biggest achievement so far has been reaching the Cup semi-finals in one of these competitions.
Training has been split between players in Suva, mainly tertiary students who train daily at Albert Park, and the village-based players who continue their preparations back home.
“Our greatest ambition is to help our boys secure rugby contracts overseas so they can support their families,” said Soveavavanua
“At the same time we are fighting against a growing problem among youths and that is drug use.”
The team has taken a strong stand against substance abuse, enforcing a strict no-drug policy.
“If any player is found using drugs, they are immediately dropped from the next tournament squad,” Soveavavanua said.
