Chiefs arrested for drunk, demanding money

Police in Tulagi have arrested two chiefs from Salesapa village in Central Islands province for demanding money on November 17, 2024.

RSIPF Commissioner Mostyn Mangau said, the arrests have been done during a patrol to small Ngella.

Commissioner Mangau said, it was alleged that the two chiefs were drunk and approached the victims’ family, and they harshly demanded $10,000 cash.

Mr. Mangau said, the suspects demand the victims’ family because their son has an affair with their village girl, and they said that she was pregnant. There are no proofs of pregnancy, as stated on her medical report.

The police chief said the suspects were formally arrested and dealt with.

All documents have been prepared for court for their trial on a later date.

“This incident is a good classic example of people with status in our communities to reconsider their approaches in such a situation.

“There are ways to go about such problems rather than demanding a huge amount of money that someone could be implicated in,” said Mangau.

He said our young boys and girls try to consider a healthy relationship that both sides of the parties know and well arrange to avoid such happenings between families.

“This is to avoid any unwanted activities from happening to us.”
