There were fears someone might have been trapped in the vehicle.

However, about 8.45pm, Fire and Emergency said no one had been found in the car, and there was no indication anyone else was in the river or nearby.

Hato Hone St John said crews were called out but were stood down by police before arrival.

Police told the Herald they were notified about 7.20pm a vehicle had appeared to go off the road into the river near the intersection of Pratt St and New Brighton Rd.

“There are no concerns for anyone’s safety.”
