Cane growers to receive full final payment after waiver of deductions – The Fiji Times

Cane farmers will receive their full final payment for the 2024 season today following the Government’s decision to waive all statutory deductions and loan repayments, a move welcomed by the Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) as a major relief for growers.

SCGC Chief Executive Officer Vimal Dutt said the waiver ensures that “the full benefit of this payment goes directly into the hands of our growers.”

“This initiative provides immediate financial relief for families, helps growers clear farm expenses, and encourages reinvestment in their farms,” Mr. Dutt said.

The final cane payment of $9.47 per tonne includes a Government top-up of $8.27 and a wash-up payment of $1.20, will be made today.

Mr. Dutt said the timing of the payment, just ahead of the Deepawali festival, was especially meaningful for growers.

“It’s a time of celebration and new beginnings, and this support could not have come at a better moment,” he said.

He added that the Government’s continued backing, both financial and moral, has restored confidence in the sugar industry after a challenging season that included the temporary shutdown of the Rarawai Mill.

“The waiver reflects true commitment to the welfare of growers.”

“It’s a strong show of faith in their hard work and in the future of Fiji’s sugar industry.”

He added the forecast price for the 2025 season is $71.41 per tonne, with a delivery payment of $42.85 per tonne.
