A 30-year-old Nausori police constable dived into the Rewa River and saved a woman who had jumped into the river from a jetty at Koroqaqa.
An article published in The Fiji Times on June 4, 1985, reported police constable Nirbhay Singh of Nausori Police Station dived in 10 feet deep water and rescued his neighbour Kala Wati, 30.
Constable Singh said after rescuing the woman, he gave first aid and cardiac massage to revive her.
He said at about 12.30pm a small boy came running to his house and told him someone had jumped into the river.
Constable Singh said he ran to the spot about 100 metres away and saw the woman’s head bobbing.
He had to push the girl’s hysterical mother aside to jump into the river.
He said Kala had swallowed water and was unconscious when he brought her to dry land.
A schoolteacher from a crowd of about 30 offered to take Kala to her home where she was wrapped in a blanket and rushed to the Nausori Hospital.
Constable Singh said it took him about 15 minutes to revive Kala.
