Aust funds Maleai market house project

The Shortland Islands Constituency in Western Province has successfully secured approval for its Maleai Market House project.

This following the announcement of selected projects under the Solomon Islands Australia Community Partnership program in Honiara last week.

The Maleai project is among 50 community development initiatives chosen nationwide for funding and support through the partnership, which continues to play a vital role in enhancing local infrastructure and improving livelihoods in rural areas.

The Member of the Parliament (MP) for Shorthand Constituency, Junior Isikeli Vave along with his Constituency Project Officer and other Constituency representatives signed the new project with the Australian High Commissioner Rod Hilton.

The Maleai Market House project aims to provide a dedicated and improved facility for local vendors, especially women, to sell fresh produce and other goods in a safer and more organized environment.

The market is expected to boost local economic activities, strengthen food security, and promote community cohesion.

Shortland Islands Constituency Office expressed its gratitude for the opportunity, describing the project as a step forward in empowering local communities through sustainable development.

Speaking to Solomon Star in an interview, Constituency Development Officer of Shortland Constituency, Benard Vave Laore said this project was identified by their team as a vital need for the Village of Maleai.

Laore said Maleai is the biggest village in Shortlands and the common berthing point of all ships coming into the Shortland Islands

The Maleai Market House is expected to begin construction later this year, with implementation overseen by the constituency office in collaboration with local stakeholders.
