Asia-Pacific journos complete internship with CGTN

TWENTY-FOUR Asia-Pacific regional journalists undertaking an exchange program in China for international journalists have concluded a two-day attachment with various departments of the China Global Television Network in Beijing on Tuesday 17 June.

Of the group of 24 journalists, eight were assigned to the News Gathering Department, seven to the Commentary Department, two to the Television Production Department and seven to New Media Department.

Solomon Star Editor Deli-Sharon Oso was amongst the seven assigned to the Commentary Department.

The Commentary Department comprises different teams that are responsible for various interview programs like Dialogue, which features one host every day with guest panelists to talk about current international and domestic issues. Dialogue airs every day at 7:30pm Beijing time.

The other interview programs produced by the Commentary Department are World Insight, Point and The Hub. They have a similar format to Dialogue.

Apart from the hosting of interview programs, the Commentary Department also has a social media team that is responsible for the production of short videos for CGTN’s online platform. It also has Closer to China team which focuses on China’s democracy and governance, and the Communist Party of China’s rule, China’s modernization drive and other major issues.

“A key feature that distinguishes our department from the other departments is that we are opinion-focused. We are trying to be the bridge between China and the world. Our programs are China-conscious because we want to ensure that China’s voice is understood by the world.

“We report on both domestic and international current affairs, for example the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Central Asia and the Iran-Israel conflict to make sure our audience understands China’s take on these issues,” she said.

Ms Sun Lan, who is the Executive Producer of Closer to China, expressed delight to have the Asia-Pacific journalists at CGTN, and particularly the Commentary Department, for the internship.

She said such internship allows visiting journalists to share their views and experiences with CGTN staff and learn from each other.

The CGTN internship precedes the Asia-Pacific regional journalist’s three-day trip to Tianjin City, which commences on Wednesday 18 June.

The trip is part of the “China Up Close” flagship initiative of CGTN, where the Chinese media giant’s global media partners gather in China to capture the country’s vibrant spirit – discover its rich history and modern advancements, experience its dynamic landscapes and local communities, and share their stories with the world as eyewitnesses.
