Salma Hayek’s daughter, Valentina Pinault, reached further back into history to accompany her mother to the 2023 Oscars. Pinault picked a strapless red Isaac Mizrahi gown that her mother originally wore in 1997, long before her birth.
To the relief of Princess Charlotte, who could be keeping a close eye on the wardrobe of her mother Catherine, Princess of Wales, even royals are not immune to the attraction of haute couture hand-me-downs.
The 22-year-old heir to the Dutch throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, wore an apple-green gown from Theresia Vreugdenhil in October to an event celebrating the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam. The dress with beading on the bodice was first worn by her grandmother, Queen Beatrix, in 1981 for a state visit to Belgium. In 2014, Catharina-Amalia’s mother, Queen Maxima, wore the dress to a concert in Amsterdam.

In July 2020, Princess Beatrice, daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, bypassed her mother’s eclectic and vibrant wardrobe to pick a gown for her wedding day first worn by her grandmother Queen Elizabeth. The Norman Hartnell dress was worn by the Queen in 1962 to the London premiere of Lawrence of Arabia.
Beatrice described wearing the dress as an “honour”. For Apple, wearing her mother’s clothes appears to be more of a habit.
