Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War celebrates 9th anniversary

“Peace is a shared responsibility that requires the collective efforts of all individuals.”

This was shared by Assistant Minister for communication Aliki Bia during the 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), hosted by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) at the Fiji Museum.

The event, held under the theme “Building Bridges for National Peace Initiatives: Establishing Citizen-led Legislate Peace Program,” brought together youth groups, civil society members, and local leaders to explore ways communities can take the lead in promoting peace in Fiji and beyond.

While delivering his opening remarks, Vice Branch Director of HWPL Fiji, Epeli Bakatava shared that peace cannot be sustained by words alone but by accelerated action.

“It requires action, initiatives that unite people across different backgrounds, efforts that empower youth, and laws that uphold justice,” Mr Balatava said.

“That is why we are here today, to raise awareness about the DPCW and its role in advocating for an international legal foundation for peace.”

He said HWPL and IPYG are working together on Legislate Peace (LP) projects like peace-themed clean-up walks, fun runs, and dance challenges to promote peace.

Additionally Director of HWPL Fiji, Anya Marchenko shared how the organization promotes peace around the world, especially through the “Legislate Peace” project and the DPCW.

The DPCW, created in 2016, includes 10 articles and 38 clauses that support disarmament, non-violence, and peaceful ways to solve conflicts. It has received global support from communities and leaders who believe in building a culture of peace.

The plogging campaign, organized in partnership with youth NGO One Nation Our People (ONOP), has already held successful events in Suva and Lautoka, with more scheduled for April 19 and 20.
