THE Ministry of Employment is looking into the issue of job losses and affected livelihoods resulting from the withdrawal of aid funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
This was confirmed by the Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh who said they were “working on the reports”.
“The ministry is currently working within the ambit of the Employment Relations Act 2007 to resolve the issues and ensure workers are fairly paid their dues,” he said.
“As part of the process stipulated within the Employment Relations Act 2007, the ministry is working on the reports.
“My advice to all workers in the development aid sector is to follow the due process in terms of employment relations policies at their workplace and contact the ministry if they are not able to resolve their employment issues.”
In the wake of aid cuts imposed by the United States in February, Mr Singh said they had received letters of redundancy from certain organisations and would provide additional details on these developments later.
“The ministry is bolstering its compliance monitoring and enforcement activities.
“We are increasing inspections and audits to ensure adherence to national labour laws and regulations, safeguarding the rights and welfare of all workers in Fiji.
“Where non-compliance is identified, the ministry will take appropriate action to ensure rectification and prevent future occurrences.”
He said they had also intensified efforts in several key areas including strengthening proactive engagement with employers and employees within the development aid sector for better understanding of employment laws, rights and responsibilities.
“The ministry encourages all workers and employers facing employment-related problems to reach out to our offices for assistance.
“We are dedicated to providing support and guidance to ensure a fair and just working environment for all Fijians.”
