Residents of Kariki Village in far Shortlands island in Western Province have expressed serious public safety concerns following the discovery of an unexploded ordinance (UXO) along Kariki Road.
The ordnance is reportedly located in an area frequently used by villagers for gardening and other daily activities, posing a significant risk to the local community, particularly women and children.
A concerned resident said, the presence of the bomb has caused fear among villagers.
“This bomb has been here for some time, and people pass through the area every day to go to their gardens.
We are very worried that an accident could happen at any time, especially involving children,” he told this paper.
Community members are now calling on the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) and relevant authorities to urgently inspect the area and safely remove the UXO.
Residents say immediate action is needed to prevent potential injuries or loss of life and to ensure the safety of those living in and around Kariki village.
The community is appealing for swift assistance to secure the area and remove the bomb before a tragic incident occurs.
