More Road Safety Features To Be Installed – Solomon Star News

Permanent road safety features will soon be installed along the Henderson to Mberande Road in East Guadalcanal, where road improvement works under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP) are nearing completion.

Similar safety features will also be installed along upgraded roads within Honiara City, with works scheduled for completion by mid-2026.

These safety features include roadside guardrails, guideposts, road markings, and traffic signs. These are crucial for road safety, regulating traffic flow, and providing clear and timely information to both drivers and pedestrians.

It will help warn of potential hazards, guide road users, and provide advice such as speed limits, upcoming speed humps, narrow bridges, and other road conditions.

Supervising Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) Mike Qaqara said the installation of this road furniture is a critical component of the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and improve overall road user behavior.

“These features are purposely meant to protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and nearby communities. Respecting and following them is everyone’s responsibility.”

In past years some road safety features installed under similar projects have been vandalized or stolen.

“This is deeply disappointing, not only from a road safety perspective, but because it undermines our efforts and reflects an irresponsible attitude, which is uncalled for,” Mr. Qaqara said.

The general public is urged to show good stewardship towards these public road assets.

“Community leaders and parents must take the lead to share this message with each household and those using the main road stretch from the western end of Honiara all the way up to eastern Guadalcanal.

Road users are also encouraged to take time to familiarize themselves with the meaning of different road signs and to comply with the information and instructions provided.

Currently, road signs are seldom seen along many public roads in Honiara and road networks in the provinces.

The attached road signages provide guidance on the legal status and its intended purpose.

More awareness programs will be rolled out soon.
