According to skincare guru and celebrity facialist Melanie Grant, a double cleanse at night is an absolute must. “I generally like to start with an oil or balm cleanser on a dry face, followed by a gel or cream cleanser for the second round,” she says.
Grant says this two-step cleansing routine helps to free up pores and preps skin for incoming serums and active ingredients to work when skin is in its regenerative phase at night.

The process starts with an oil-based cleanser; try Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Oil ($55) to break down make-up, sebum, sunscreen and the build-up caused by exposure to pollution. Oil-based cleansers effectively dissolve and draw out oil-based impurities, and the easy slip of an oil base makes massaging the skin as part of your routine a breeze.
For best massage results, work hands upwards and outwards over your oil cleanser to target circulation and help with lymphatic drainage. Focus on the jawline, cheekbones, under the eyes (inner to outer), and forehead with a zigzagging upward motion. Finish by drawing fingers towards the ears and neck. This is also great for releasing facial tension.

As the final step in the routine, add a toner. Korean toners are hydrating and help to optimise the skin’s pH level. The best pH is slightly acidic, typically around 4.5 to 5.5, as this supports the skin’s protective acid mantle and helps keep moisture in. Try Innisfree Green Tea Enzyme PHA Toner ($29).
One tip I have gleaned over the years is to do your cleansing routine as soon as you get home, as the will to double-cleanse after falling into a stupor on the sofa is negligible and a quick micellar swipe is about all you’re likely to muster. For the morning routine, Grant recommends a gentle gel or micellar water as a quick complexion refresh to remove any sweat and sebum. Try Laneige Water Bank Gentle Gel Cleanser ($47).
