For MelI Yasawa, a senior development officer for the South at the Fiji Football Association, soccer is more than just a sport, it’s a pathway to healthy living.

Through his work with young players and communities, Meli promotes fitness, discipline and good nutrition, encouraging Fijians to lead active and balanced lifestyles both on and off the field.

With his occupation, Meli spends most of his time traveling to schools and communities promoting football or just helping develop district team programs in the South.

Meli resides in Vunimono, Nausori and started his coaching career volunteering for “Just Play” for more than five years.

Despite the challenges he faced he continued to strive on to become the coordinator for the Rewa and Tailevu Naitasiri football teams.

His sheer determination and hard work did not go unnoticed by the chief executive officer (CEO) of Fiji Football, Mohamed Yusuf.

Mr Yusuf offered him an opportunity usually only given to national reps.

“The CEO of Fiji football saw my potential and work ethic he offered me a job opportunity I couldn’t refuse,” he said

Away from the field, those who know him describe Meli as humble and approachable.

He enjoys simple routines, one of which is shopping at Pac & Save where he often picks up groceries and essentials after long days in the field.

For him Pac & Save offers convenience and affordability.

“I just buy my meat stuff and sugar, flour and rice at ‘Pac & Save’, for the vegies and food crops I have a backyard farm at home,” he said.

As a development officer Meli strongly urges parents and guardians to choose wisely when they shop.

The native from Vuci Tokatoka Tailevu says, “It is very important for parents to choose the right things when they go shopping”

“Fruits is a must. As a former district rep myself I have experienced the advantage of choosing the right food and sticking to a healthy diet.”

In the end, Meli’s work speaks for itself through every clinic, school visit and community program, where he continues to use football as a tool for opportunity and change.

His quiet but consitant dedication is shaping young players in ways that will be felt long into the future of soccer in Fiji.
