Blacktown Police Area Commander, Superintendent Brendan Gorman said Seve and both men in custody were known to police, and that any potential underworld links would be explored as part of an investigation.

He said police heard the gunshots as they were fired, and were on the scene “within seconds”, leading to the arrests of the alleged offenders’ within a “very short time” after the shooting.

Forensic officers found two unloaded guns and bullets dumped in front of a suburban home about 300 metres from the shooting.

A witness, electrician Mohammed Hamdan, said when he heard about five bangs, he knew immediately they were bullets.

”I’m from Palestine, Gaza,” said Hamdan, who arrived in Sydney two years ago.

“I have heard this sound before, but here in Australia, this is the first time I have experienced something like that.

“It was a war zone when I last heard something like this.”

Hamdan said he was eating lunch only 50 metres from where the shooting took place, inside a community centre. When he ran out onto the street after hearing the bullets, he saw someone fleeing on foot.

”The sound was so strong,” he said. “I saw police cars here near the entrance, and someone running and jumping the fence.”
