This couple has transformed a dilapidated shopfront in Sydney’s inner west into a semi-detached family home brimming with colour, texture and personality.
The house
A two-storey, three-bedroom, two-bathroom property created by subdividing a heritage corner shop, circa 1890, in Marrickville.
Who lives here
Partners Tom Hume, builder and director of Make Projects, and designer Joscelyn Tarr, their daughter Ronnie, 3, and dog Otis.

What we did
“With our project partners, Mackenzie Pronk Architects, we subdivided the property to provide offices for their practice behind the original corner shop façade, and our family home next door,” says Hume. “We rebuilt the structure using recycled bricks, while the interiors feature colourful joinery and raw, textural finishes that reflect our style.”
Favourite room
“The combined living/kitchen/dining room,” says Tarr. “High ceilings and varied textures create a warm, inviting space.”
The ’hood
“Marrickville is vibrant, creative and full of energy,” says Tarr. “We can walk everywhere for great food and live music.”
Future plans
“We want to stretch a net across the void space above the living room,” says Hume. “Ronnie will be able to access it to hang out, read and play games.”
Best advice
“Go with your gut,” says Tarr. “If you love a material or a specific
finish or colour, use it to inspire.”
