Fiji is set to enter a new era of digital connectivity, with the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications officially issuing 5G spectrum licences to the country’s three major telecommunications operators – Digicel Fiji, Vodafone Fiji, and Telecom Fiji.
The licences, signed by Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali, will take effect from 15 September 2025.
Each of the operators welcomed the development, highlighting its significance in reshaping Fiji’s connectivity and economic landscape.
Digicel Fiji CEO Farid Mohammed said the company’s substantial investment in 5G aligns with the government’s clear vision for a connected digital future.
“The government’s support has enabled us to deploy this next-generation technology, and we are proud to be part of this transformation. This is more than faster internet – it’s about opening up new possibilities for our people and industries,” he said.
Vodafone Fiji is gearing up for the first phase of its rollout and has already completed extensive testing.
CEO Elenoa Biukoto said the technology promises substantial gains for key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, finance, and tourism.
“We’re excited to collaborate with government and the Telecommunications Authority to bring 5G to life. This isn’t just a network upgrade—it’s a foundation for innovation,” she said.
Telecom Fiji CEO Charles Goundar described the move as a “landmark decision” that will vastly improve connectivity and expand access to digital services.
“The timely allocation of spectrum empowers us to drive innovation and reduce the digital divide. This is a game-changer for all Fijians,” he said.
The 5G rollout will occur in three phases between 2025 and 2028.
Phase 1 (2025) will be Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, and Denarau, under phase 2 (2026) Nasinu, Lami, Labasa, and Savusavu will see a rollout and in phase 3 (2027 onward) Nausori, Sigatoka, Navua, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and Korovou will be targetted.
At the same time, the government is upgrading rural and maritime networks to 4G, ensuring that no community is left behind.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Hon. Manoa Kamikamica, said the deployment is being carried out strategically and responsibly to support inclusive national development.
“This rollout not only addresses local challenges but also positions Fiji as a regional leader in digital transformation.”
