Apia, Samoa – 01 August 2025: A family at Mulifanua is mourning the loss of their 9-year-old son to dengue fever making him the fourth victim since Samoa declared the outbreak.

The boy’s death has raised further concern over the dengue fever outbreak as the Deputy Director of the Paediatric Ward at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole, Ulugia Dr. Tito Kamu urges parents to bring their children to seek medical assistance early.

He said the latest victim had been sick for five days and the family relied on traditional medicines before the child was brought to the hospital.

The youngest victim was a 5-year-old girl from Saoluafata who died last week.

The public concerns voiced on social media is directed at the Government to be more active and address the issue before Samoa sees a repetition of the measles epidemic which claimed about 100 lives in 2019.

There is also a call to extend the closing of schools.

Ulugia is also making a call for parents to act immediately and bring the children in as soon as they see symptoms of high fever, vomiting, sore joints in children and not wait until the conditions become serious.
