Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has paid tribute to legendary Fijian musician George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso, following news of his passing, calling him “a proud son of Fiji” and “one of the greatest musicians of all time.”

In a statement, Prime Minister Rabuka said he was deeply saddened by the loss of a man whose voice and music inspired countless people across the Pacific and beyond.

“A proud son of Fiji, a legend in his own right—his voice inspired so many across the Pacific and around the world,” the Prime Minister said. “A true ambassador of Fiji on the regional and international stage, his music inspired generations and his legacy will live on in the hearts of thousands of people.”

Mr Veikoso, known to fans simply as “Fiji,” rose to fame in the late 1980s and became one of the most recognised Pacific Island artists globally.

Known for his smooth vocals and fusion of reggae, R&B, and island music, he released multiple award-winning albums and collaborated with top artists throughout his decades-long career.

His music carried themes of love, identity, resilience, and Pacific pride—earning him widespread acclaim and a devoted following not only in Fiji and the Pacific but also in the United States, particularly among Pacific diaspora communities in Hawaii and California.

“On behalf of the Government and the people of Fiji, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fans around the world,” Mr Rabuka said.

“Rest in peace, Fiji.”
