JOHN WONG ABA GETS THE GONG

JOHN WONG ABA – the King of Downstream Processing in Solomon Islands on Monday 7th July 2025 was awarded the Cross of Solomon Islands (CSI) – the nation’s Distinguished Order at the ceremony marking Solomon Islands 47th independence anniversary.

Mr. Aba was one of six people who received awards announced a year ago.

Governor General Sir David Kapu presented the medals at a rain-soaked ceremony at the National Stadium in Honiara on Monday.

The CSI was awarded to Mr. Aba, according to his citation, for “dedicated service to economic, commerce and community development.

Aged 63 years old, Mr Aba is a Solomon Islands National. He attended Chung Wah Primary School from 1967 to 1975.

In 1982, he started the Aba Corporation and was the Managing Director for 23 years. During that time, he created employment opportunities for hundreds, if not thousands whose income also contributed to the country’s economy.

In 2003, he started the Top Timber Company, a wholesaler and retailer timber merchant, specializing in downstream processing.

“It is the first downstream processing company that capitalizes on the government policy to encourage local people participate in economic activities in rural Solomon Islands.

“Over the years he has contributed to the social and economic development of Solomon Islands through his timber company, providing employment and income for many rural Solomon Islanders. 

“He also contributed to many good causes within our country, contributing and easing the challenges faced by disadvantaged groups and communities,” according to the citation read at the ceremony.

Soon after the ceremony, Mr. Aba was mobbed by family, friends and relatives who braved the rain to see their hero.

Over the years, John Aba has rendered assistance to our rural people, institutions, sport clubs, church groups, schools, and to successive governments.
