Malaita NOD league table officially launched

THE Malaita Province “No Open Defecation” (NOD) League Table was officially launched on Friday in Auki, marking a significant step in the region’s efforts to promote safe sanitation practices.

The NOD League Table ranks each ward in the province based on the percentage of their population practicing no open defecation, aiming to drive progress and accountability at the grassroots level.

The launch event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including senior representatives from the Malaita provincial health service, provincial government officials, non-governmental organizations, ward development committee chairpersons, ward support officers, church and community leaders.

Malaita province has described the launch as a bold and strategic move to accelerate progress to ensure that men, women, and children have access to safe sanitation.

The province said, open defecation is more than just a sanitation issue.

“It is a matter of dignity, safety, and public health. We are all too familiar with its impacts—waterborne diseases, stunted growth in children, environmental contamination, and preventable deaths. 

“But we also know that through commitment, community ownership, and strong leadership, this is a challenge we can overcome,” the statement said.

It was highlighted that the NOD League Table as a vital tool for recognizing progress, motivating change, and fostering accountability in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

“This is not just a scoreboard. Let it be your compass—guiding your actions and inspiring collaboration among communities, schools, churches, and local authorities,” Malaita province said.

The Australian Government had been acknowledged for its financial support, delivered through UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, as well as the Provincial Government and Malaita Provincial Health Service’s WASH team for implementing the program on the ground.

He further commended stakeholders and community leaders for their continued support in driving the initiative at the community level.
