Team Fiji women’s volleyball team is confident of a good outing at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau.

The Games, which is from June 29 to July 9, will feature athletes from 23 Pacific nations competing across 12 sports.

Speaking to SUNsports on Tuesday, head coach Emori Bakewa said they have a young team but are optimistic about their chances of winning a medal.

“We have seven high school students in our squad; it is a young side but I know what they are capable of,” he said.

“There is a mix of experience and newcomers but the team is ready.”

Bakewa said the players are in good spirits for the Games.

“We have worked closely with the players about the Games protocols. We are in camp at the moment; especially when we have new debutants.

“The Games wanted a big involvement of youths that is why we have stuck with this selection,” he said.

Bakewa said they have seven high school students in the squad.

“They were attentive to instructions, reason being they are first timers. They have really performed much better than I expected.

“Very attentive, good listeners, good athletes and I know they will do well in Palau.”

He said the team would send 12 players and two coaching staff to Palau.

“This six-a-side volleyball games at the Mini Games is really a challenge and we know what is to be expected.

“We need to work together and we need to up our game plan to compete in the highest level,” he added.

Bakewa said the target is to win a medal.

“We want a medal; that is our aim.

“We are working towards it and we are ready for it,” he said.

Bakewa is grateful for the support from families, friends, the association and their sponsors to make this dream a reality.

“The $3000 levy per person was a challenge for the team; but thanks to everyone who supported, we were able to achieve it.

“It is the first time this levy is being implemented and I hope it’s the last time also,” he added.
