Arson suspect surrenders to Auki police

A SUSPECT involved in an arson incident at Sinali Village in East Fataleka, Malaita Province, has voluntarily surrendered to police in Auki.

The man turned himself in at the Auki Police Station fortnight ago, following a public appeal by police for those involved in the incident to come forward for questioning.

Malaita Provincial Police Operations Manager, Inspector Michael Ramosaea, confirmed to the Solomon Star that the suspect is currently being interviewed as part of ongoing investigations.

The arson attack, which took place in May 2025, is believed to have been carried out by a group of men in retaliation over a dispute involving allegations of sorcery.

The victim’s home and kitchen were completely destroyed in the fire, leaving the family homeless.

The incident has sparked fear amongst villagers, particularly women and children with some reportedly experiencing trauma.

Inspector Ramosaea said police are continuing their investigation and work to maintain peace between the groups involved in the dispute.

“The suspect’s surrender reflects the ongoing efforts and commitment of police to work closely with communities to restore peace,” Ramosaea said.

He also acknowledged the valuable support of community leaders in assisting police with resolving the matter.
