New premier for Central Islands Province

New premier for Central Islands Province

Central Islands Province has a new Provincial Premier. He is Hon. Kenneth Sagupari, the Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Ward 2 in Central West Ngella.

He was elected during the election on Wednesday.

According to reports, Sagupari received 8 votes, defeating his rival, Hon. David Manetiva, who garnered 4 votes.

One ballot paper was declared invalid.

The election was conducted after the former premier Michael Salini was voted out during a motion of no confidence early this week.

Salini was voted out with 8 to 5 votes after two of his former ministers resigned and joined the Non-Executive members.

The two contestants were: David Manetiva and Kenneth Sagupari.

Manetiva was the candidate of the former premier Salini, whilst Sagupari for the Non-Executive members.

Speaker of the Central Islands Provincial Assembly Francis Noah following the election said, ”This vote signifies the successful conclusion of the election process that began with a motion earlier this month.”

A total of 13 MPAs participated in the election, showcasing a strong turnout.

The Speaker praised the peaceful conduct of the election and expressed appreciation to all members of the assembly and the residents of Central Islands Province for their involvement and support.

“With the election concluded, we now await the new Premier’s announcement of his team of ministers. Work will begin once portfolios are assigned,” he added.
