Fiji’s super bantamweight boxer Junior Binnu Singh will show Runqi Zhou that there are competent boxers in Fiji when they fight for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania title on July 19.
It will be the main bout of the Kings Boxing Promotions at Suva’s Vodafone Arena, Suva.
Singh said his biggest drive to fight the Australian –based boxer was the passing away of Ubayd Haider (formerly Nathan Singh) following his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Asia Pacific Featherweight title fight against Zhou in Nadi on October 2024.
“Nathan (Haider) was just like my brother and he lost his life in that fight, so I wanted to fight that guy (Zhou) and prove that there are better guys in Fiji to fight him,” he said.
He added that Zhou is a great boxer and they have laid out plans to win on the day.
“I know he (Zhou) is a good boxer; I’m going to come for him. I’m coming prepared.”
“Mental preparation in boxing should be 100 per cent because everything is in our mind.”
Singh is likely to travel to Australia to train if he does not have a suitable sparring partner in the country.
He has been training under an English trainer Bobby Mason for the past two weeks.
“I have seen the way Binnu (Singh) fights and his capabilities in his last couple of fights. For me I think he is very confident fight,” Mason said.
He added they’re also obsessed with Zhou watching his previous fights and preparing a plan for him.
“The reason we watch him (Zhou) because we respect his fitness level. This is where we’re not going in with any kind of ego, we going to go in with a good solid plan and execute the plan on the day,” he added.
Zhou trains under world renowned trainer Angelo Hyder.
Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) chairman Adi Narayan said the highlight of the programme is having a WBA title fight in Fiji for the first time.
Promoter Nahroon Buksh is hopeful of a sell-out event.
