First female MP for West Guadalcanal vows to serve

Mary Daniella Zae Garu has created history as the first female Member of Parliament (MP) for the West Guadalcanal constituency.

Her victory came following the by-election held on June 4th 2025. This marks a significant milestone for the region.

Mrs. Garu, who is set to take office soon, expressed her commitment to continuing the programs initiated by her late husband, Moses Garu.

In an interview with the Solomon Star Tuesday, June 10th, she shared her thoughts on her achievement and her vision for the future.

She also took time to acknowledge all the voters who turned up to cast their ballots.

“Firstly, I want to thank those who placed their trust in me during my campaign, despite the numerous challenges we faced, including adverse weather conditions and financial constraints,” she said.

Acknowledging the support of her constituents, Mrs. Garu emphasized the importance of unity within the community to ensure the successful implementation of the constituency’s long-term development plans.

“I urge all the people of West Guadalcanal to come together and work in partnership to achieve stability and progress,” she appealed.

“Let’s unite to develop our constituency.”

Mrs. Garu also emphasized that her role as a representative extends to all constituents, regardless of whether they voted for her.

She won by 300 votes over her next rival Anthony Veke.
