Ports celebrate 69th anniversary

The Solomon Islands Ports Authority on Wednesday celebrated its 69th Anniversary at Unity Square, Point Cruz, Honiara, marking nearly seven decades of service to the country.

The celebration saw staff members taking a well-deserved break from their duties to honour this significant milestone in the port’s history.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr George Rausi addressed the gathering and reflected on the port’s achievements over the years, emphasising the importance of teamwork and dedication.

“Sixty-nine years ago, Solomon Ports started as a small operation at a Copra wharf. It has since evolved to become the first State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) in the region, combining two international wharves—one in Honiara and the other in Noro.

“Today, Solomon Ports employs around 500 staff, reflecting the organization’s growth and its status as the leading port in the region over the last 69 years,” he reflected.

Mr. Rausi highlighted that the collaborative efforts of all staff members have been essential in overcoming challenges and promoting the port’s development.

“I want to express my gratitude to those who played a pivotal role in transforming ports into what they are today.”
He also acknowledged the current employees for their hard work and dedication in building Solomon Ports.

“Their efforts not only enhance the welfare of our families but also contribute to the socio-economic well-being of our country,” he said.

He also acknowledged the stakeholders and partners who have been with the ports for the past 69 years, as well as the successive governments for their guidance and policy direction that have helped SIPA achieve its mandate and objectives, which are reflected in today’s achievements.

The Port was established in June 1965 as the “British Protectorate Ports Authority” and was initially established to export Logs and Copra, two of the country’s major commodities at that time.

Over the years, the port has established itself as one of the top SOEs in the country and a leading port in the region.

As part of the event, the longest-serving staff also took time to share their journey on the port, their experiences, and future aspirations for the port.

A high school speech competition was also organised for high school students as part of the celebration.
