Seif Ples, in partnership with UN Women, has successfully conducted a series of community awareness sessions on gender-based violence (GBV) across Sun-Valley, Rate Community High School, and Borderline Kobito 3.
These sessions are part of a broader initiative to empower women, girls, and the wider community with knowledge and access to critical support services, in line with the Solomon Islands’ Family Protection Act.
GBV remains a pressing issue in the Solomon Islands, with 64% of women aged 15–49 having experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner.
The awareness sessions, funded by UN Women, aimed to break the silence, educate communities, and promote the use of vital services such as Seif Ples’ emergency accommodation, medical care, and toll-free helpline (132).
Key Outcomes and Community Impact
- Increased Reporting: May saw a notable rise in calls to the National GBV Helpline, including first-time reports from women with disabilities and male survivors, reflecting greater community trust and awareness.
- Full Capacity Support: Seif Ples’ emergency accommodation operated at full capacity, highlighting the urgent need for such services.
- Engaged Participation: Over 200 students at Rate Community High School and dozens of community members at Sun-Valley and Borderline Kobito 3 participated in interactive sessions, group discussions, and quizzes to deepen their understanding of GBV and available support.
Presentations were delivered in both English and Solomon Islands Pidgin, ensuring accessibility. Seif Ples staff addressed real-life scenarios, clarified misconceptions, and emphasized that their services are available to all survivors—women, girls, and men alike.
While the sessions were well-received, challenges such as adverse weather, environmental noise, and lingering social stigma were encountered. Moving forward, Seif Ples recommends:
- Conducting baseline surveys to tailor future awareness activities
- Investing in communication equipment for large gatherings
- Developing ongoing engagement plans for high-risk communities
Seif Ples encourages all Solomon Islanders to stand against gender-based violence. Survivors and concerned individuals are urged to contact the Seif Ples helpline (132) for confidential support and information.
Seif Ples is the Solomon Islands’ leading frontline agency supporting survivors of gender-based violence, offering emergency shelter, medical care, and referral services in partnership with SAFENET.
