Noro residents and vehicle owners in Western Province are now enjoying the roads improvement project as work continues towards its final completion.
The project described as a key investment under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2) aims to transform the township road network.
As work continues to make steady progress, to date five kilometers of asphalt paving have been covered.
The contractor is now preparing for sealing the roads, concrete pavement, and drainage upgrades for the remaining half of the project roads in Noro.
The project is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID).
Despite heavy rainfall, progress has been maintained through effective planning, achieving 66 percent completion by April 2025. The contractor has completed placement, compaction, and field density testing of sub-grade, sub-base, and base-course for Baru Feeder Road in April 2025.
It is now working on these for sections of Industrial Road, Mobile Road, Ports Entry and Exit Roads, Customs Road, COC Road, Bonito Road, and Catholic Road.
Each stage is being closely supervised by the Supervision Consultant to ensure full compliance with quality control and technical specifications.
As part of its environmental safeguards, the project also carried out water quality monitoring at both the marine waters and camp borehole water source, underscoring its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
The Noro Roads Improvement represents a vital investment in transport connectivity, road safety, and economic activity in the Western Province.
Through continued monitoring and strategic adaptation, the work remains on track to deliver high-quality infrastructure that will benefit the community for years to come.
In addition to the Noro roads, SIRAP2 is also working on upgrades to Honiara and Munda International Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields; maintenance of regional airports; and construction of four new bridges, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of East Road between Baratolo and Atori and sealing of 12 kilometres of North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction in Malaita.
