The Fiji Airways Fijiana Sevens team is eyeing for a win in next weekend’s HSBC SVNS World Championship’s Los Angeles tournament.
This was revealed yesterday by Fijiana 7s head coach Richard Walker during a Zoom call interview.
The Fijians are pooled alongside Australia, France and hosts USA in Pool B.
Walker said the team is preparing well for this much-anticipated tournament.
“We’ve landed in Los Angeles last week to acclimatise to the weather and time zone. It is a different build-up but the girls are doing great,” he said.
He added the team is injury-free and are having a good session so far.
“This is the big one; we want to win and we have set our sights on it. We have come a long way throughout the tournaments this season but we are here to try and win this one,” he said.
Walker said the team has reached the Vancouver 7s Cup final and it is only the beginning of something bigger.
“I’m here just to guide the team and help the team progress. It is a good progress so far; we aim to improve and get our girls game ready on game day,” he said.
Walker added that it is an honour to coach a team he has been watching and coaching against.
“We have a huge depth of talent; we will execute it anywhere in the field.
“That’s the beauty of Fijian rugby,” he said.
Walker said the team would work on their defence during preparation.
“As we know, there are a lot of strike weapons on other teams; but we are focused on stopping them.
“This is a must win tournament and we are up for the challenge,” Walker added.
